Water Safety Day

Water Safety Day

Last week the WPCA group drove out to west haven in the harbor to participate in the drowning prevention Auckland program.

First we were split into groups, then put into bigger groups that would then go onto our rotation. My groups first rotation was how to rescue a drowning person.

We were first taught to throw the drowner something that floats like, a bucket, a water bottle or  container from the amazing line of Tupperware products *not sponsored* to help them float. Once they've calmed down you would throw them a rope to hoist them back in. I loved this activity as it involved bombing into the water, swimming out and getting pulled in at super speeds.

Our next activity probably my favorite, was stand up paddle boarding, first we split into pairs, chose a paddle board and set off.I already knew how to paddle board but my partner Courtney didn't. I found it hard to stand up with another person on it. It took a little bit of time to get used to but i managed to pull it off. One of my best moments was when we broke the record of most people on a paddle board at once, the entire paddle board was underwater!!.

Our next activity was kyacking where again I was with Courtney. At one point she saw a pine cone in the water and jumped out to get it. To get the pine cone she stood up and stood on the side, only except she stood on the side a little to long and well, we capsized. while in the water she decided to hijack another kyack and capsize it as well, she then swam back to help me uncapsize our boat and just as we got back level it was time for our next activity.

This was our last activity and it was around a dinghy. First we got in it and capsized it, then we had to swim under it take a couple of breaths and swim out. After we had to flip the boat back over and climb in.

I really enjoyed the day and would love to do it again.
